Senior subject guide

The Senior Subject Guide is a resource to plan your Senior Education Pathway. It will provide you with information regarding this phase of schooling including subject selections, qualifications and tertiary entrance. Click here to view the complete Senior Subject Guide or individual subjects can be found in the tables below.

Senior subjects

The QCAA develops four types of senior subject syllabuses — Applied, General, General (Extension), and Short Course. Results in Applied and General subjects contribute to the award of a QCE and may contribute to an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) calculation, although no more than one result in an Applied subject can be used in the calculation of a student’s ATAR.

Typically, it is expected that most students will complete these courses across Years 11 and 12. All subjects build on the P–10 Australian Curriculum.

For more information about specific subjects, schools, students and parents/carers are encouraged to access the relevant senior syllabuses at www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/senior/senior-subjects

Applied and Applied (Essential) syllabuses

Applied subjects are suited to students who are primarily interested in pathways beyond senior secondary schooling that lead to vocational education and training or work.

General syllabuses

General subjects are suited to students who are interested in pathways beyond senior secondary schooling that lead primarily to tertiary studies and to pathways for vocational education and training and work.

Certificate Courses

These nationally recognised Vocational Education & Training (VET) certificate courses are available to year 11 & 12 students. The courses are delivered on campus by qualified trainers or Miami SHS VET Teachers and are fully embedded into the student’s school timetable. This means students can complete a vocational qualification without needing to miss school or attend external training during school hours. These courses are designed to support practical, career-focused learning and are offered in partnership with Registered Training Organisations (RTOs).

For students aiming to pursue further study, completing a Certificate III or IV may also provide a pathway into university, with some institutions—such as Griffith University—recognising these qualifications for entry into selected degree programs.

Please note: These courses are subject to enrolment numbers. Information and prices are subject to change without notice - please contact the provider before enrolling in the course.

Diploma Courses

Diploma courses are available to Year 11 and 12 students who are prepared for a higher level of academic challenge. These nationally recognised qualifications can support students in entering the workforce directly or progressing to university pathways with lower ATAR entry requirements. Diploma programs typically take up to two years to complete and commence at the beginning of Year 11. Upon successful completion, students may gain direct entry into selected bachelor's degree programs, with credit recognised by many leading Australian universities.
To be eligible, students must meet the Readiness Criteria – see the links below for more information.
