Support for Students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing
Miami State High School has had a long and rich history of being a centre for Deaf education on the Gold Coast. Our aim to provide 'world class' education allows our Deaf and Hard of Hearing students to access a diverse and inclusive learning environment that supports their potential for success.
We recognise and value the many Deaf and Hard of Hearing alumni who have attended our school as well as our Deaf parents and the wider Deaf community. Acknowledging the importance of Deaf culture, awareness and identity, Miami SHS seeks opportunities to collaborate with Deaf organisations and foster genuine inclusion. The 'Deaf Space' is a centre of Deaf culture that boasts artworks by Deaf artists, Deaf-specific resources and provides a safe and supportive hub for focused study sessions and the development of social / emotional skills in our Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. From 2021 onwards, Auslan (Australian Sign Language) as a LOTE program will also be available to all students with the aim of building Deaf awareness and spreading the use of Auslan throughout the school.
Leadership staff include the Head of Inclusive Practices and Head of Department – Deaf and Hard of Hearing, both of whom are experienced Teachers of the Deaf and hold Auslan qualifications. The school also employs Educational Interpreters, native Deaf Auslan Language Models (ALM) and Notetakers to ensure 'world class' education is achieved. A captioning team is also available to provide full access to all classroom and assembly video content, and voice-to-text live-captioning technology is used to support the English literacy of our students.
Other professionals that can be available on site to provide support include speech therapists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, psychologists and audiologists (visiting from Australian Hearing).
Families may apply for Transport Service assistance to support students' travel arrangements to and from school.
We welcome all parents of Deaf and Hard of Hearing children to contact us to discuss enrolment options.
