Miami State High School provides a full-time Guidance and Counselling service for its students and their parents/guardians and teachers. This service enables students to prepare and succeed in an increasingly broad and challenging range of educational and developmental issues that they may encounter through High School.
Subject selection and career pathways appropriate to their interests, aspirations and achievement
Develop effective study skills and routine
Provide essential information on all Tertiary institutions in Queensland and interstate
Helps students and parents to interpret school assessment and its effects on future pathways
Provides essential information on TAFE courses and alternative pathways to university
Provide psycho-educational assessment as part of the Educational Adjustments Program
Personal Counselling Service (Students and Parents)
Personal counselling will be available at all possible times, in crisis without appointment, otherwise by appointment.
Help students resolve personal concerns which may be impeding their progress at school/home Develop student coping skills in stressful situations during the developmental phase of adolescence
Develop parent coping skills with current parenting practices for the challenges of adolescent parenting
Act as a referral agent external agencies and specialist organisations (e.g. CYMHS, Ohana, YODA)
Provide ‘drop in’ times for student during lunch breaks
This service aims to foster the healthy growth of our students at a social, emotional and behavioural level.
Helps students obtain the latest information regarding career options following Yr10-12
Guide students in correct subject selection in order to follow their chosen career goals
Explore the various enhanced study options available to students via university while still at school
Apply for scholarships and educational prizes
Provide information seminars for students from various universities, TAFE and private providers
Students make appointments to see the Guidance Officer themselves or may be referred by teachers or administration staff through Student Services window. When parents wish to be involved in the process, they can do so by ringing the school office 5554 0333 and making an appointment.
