The annual Miami SHS Summer House Carnival (previously known as the Swimming Carnival) will take place at the Miami SHS Pool and Sporting Centre of Excellence on Friday 2nd of February 2024.

Swimming is the main event of the day alongside dodgeball, basketball shooting, chess, boardgames, an inflatable race challenge and student council led games. This re-branding aims to engage house spirit amongst the students at Miami SHS and show that there is something for everyone.

Students will meet at the Sporting Centre of Excellence and in their respective GGH classes with their GGH teacher at 8:50am. This will ensure that attendance is registered and students will be escorted to the swimming pool by their teacher. Normal school hours apply on the day, 8:50am to 2:30pm.

Students are encouraged to have fun and dress in their house colours with appropriate clothing, costumes and swim wear. Students must wear enclosed footwear to and from school. They can change into thongs once inside the pool area but are expected to put their school shoes back on to leave the pool area if they decide to get involved in other activities inside the Sporting Centre of Excellence. They must also have shoes on at the end of the day before they are dismissed.

Sun safety is a high priority at Miami SHS, and at the event there will be shade tents around the pool and a chill zone underneath I block, for students to access shade during the day. However, students are expected to wear a hat and apply sunscreen regularly. In addition, students should bring a water bottle and sun safe clothing, e.g. long sleeve shirt. No body paint is to be taken to the carnival; only coloured Zinc will be permitted on the day.

As it is a normal school day, phones are to be away for the day from gate to gate. Students are also expected to remain at school all day, with early departures approved for all students by their respective Dean at the start of the day.

The house colours are listed below and if students are unsure of which house they are in, it is listed at the top of their school timetable:

Alinta – Orange
Bindana – Green
Iluka – Blue
Rakumba – Red

There will be two food trucks providing food and drinks for students to purchase if they choose, please be mindful that payment options will only be an EFTPOS card or cash (no phones allowed).  Please note that the tuckshop will not be open so students are encouraged to pack a healthy lunch to sustain them during the event if they do not wish to purchase lunch from the food trucks.

The aim of the day is about participation and it's not just about the racing. There are lots of fun participation events for students to join in as well as belly flop competitions, teacher student relays and lots of house points up for grabs.

What happens after the swimming carnival and if my child is successful in the 50m races?  The top two swimmers from each age race, e.g. 12 year boys 50m freestyle will be eligible to participate at the Oceanic Swimming Championships on the 15th of February. More information will be sent home after the carnival to students who are selected.

If your student would like to nominate for a distance event 100m or longer in any stroke for the South Coast trials, students need to provide evidence that MUST come from Swimming Australia's Results Central website in order to be considered. These times must be submitted to Mr. Brett Sullivan in the Sporting Centre of Excellence staffroom no later than Thursday 8th February, 2024.
