Contemporary Instrumental Music Excellence

“Practice like you’ve never won, play like you’ve never lost”

The Miami State High School Contemporary Instrumental Music Excellence Program is a unique specialist music performance course.  Students are offered a high-quality and challenging curriculum to maximise and develop skills beyond existing levels of their achievement and experience.  The holistic nature of the course focused on performance excellence is designed to prepare students to thrive in a demanding music pathway to senior schooling and beyond.

Course Structure and Overview

The Contemporary Instrumental Music Excellence program is structured as a 3 year course of study from Year 7 to the end of Year 9 with 3 x 70 minute lessons per week plus additional performance workshops at regular intervals throughout the course of study. These workshops will be facilitated by JMI (Jazz Music Institute) Brisbane, a specialist jazz school delivering courses in jazz and contemporary music since 1997. JMI enjoys a reputation throughout Australia as one of the best jazz institutes in the country, producing graduates with the musical and business skills needed to thrive in the live jazz performance industry. Upon completion of the Years 7-9 Excellence Program, students are encouraged to continue their music pathway through the attainment of a Certificate II and III in Music Technology or through studying ATAR Music in Year 11 and 12.

All students will have access to the latest music pedagogical trends and performance frameworks through the practical engagement of industry professionals and teachers.  The program will include specific extension classes designed to strengthen theory, aural and practical musicianship.  Regular musical assessment and reflection, recording and analysis workshops and music performance through specific skill and concept improvement are aimed at developing the whole musician.

Excellence music students will also be enrolled in the AMEB (Australian Music Examinations Board) performance program appropriate to their level of development and will sit an end of year practical exam on their instrument of choice.  These exams will give students nationally recognised certificates of achievement.

“I always loved music and playing my instrument, but the music excellence course has improved my skill levels so much further than that.  Extension work with ear training and theory and then putting that into actual meaningful practice has improved my musicianship so far beyond what I could have imagined.  My confidence and ability to perform at a high level and in front of audiences is also really improved!”
