Girl's Rugby 7s Excellence

"From Blue and Gold to Olympic Gold"


The Miami High Girls Rugby 7’s Excellence Program aims to provide students with an Olympic Games pathway. Through funded coaching and links with the Queensland Rugby Union and Rugby Australia, students are able to access learning experiences that enhance their opportunity for active participation and employment opportunities in rugby and other sports.


Course Structure and Overview

The Girls Rugby 7’s Excellence Program consists of both a Year 7, 8, 9 combined class and a Year 10, 11, 12 combined class. All students attend 3 x 70 minute lessons per week plus additional sessions outside of curriculum time.  Students in the senior program will be expected to complete a senior subject leading to a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and contributing to Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) as part of the 3 year course.

QCE subject choices may include the following:

·           Cert III in Fitness & Cert II in Sport and Recreation

·           Cert III in Sport and Recreation & Cert II in Outdoor Recreation

·           Recreation SAS

Including Interschool sport, additional sessions and class time, students will be involved in approximately six hours per week of instruction and participation.

The Excellence program provides an opportunity to develop rugby 7’s skills through internal and external coaching and interschool sport competitions which will improve the athlete’s performance. Individual and team based programs will be designed to maximise potential so athletes can progress to higher levels of development and competition. Athletes will have access to a dedicated rugby training field, fully equipped gymnasium, accredited coaches and fitness instructors. The program will include individual fitness assessment, skills based training, regular video analysis and 7’s specific strength and conditioning. The development of the player will stem from key learning areas including; embracing “World Rugby Core Values”, psychology, sociology of sport and officiating and coaching qualifications.


This program will provide students with career pathways that include:


·         Professional players

·         Qualified coaches

·         Rugby Club managers

·         Fitness instructors

·         Event coordinators

·         Sports administrators

·         Qualified referees

·         High School Teachers



Student Experiences

The Girl's Rugby 7s Excellence Program will enhance and develop individual student learning through the following:

·         Access to Griffith University Sports Science and training facilities

·         Lectures by Griffith University staff on athlete development

·         Training with Griffith University National Women’s 7’s teams

·         Regular coaching sessions conducted by the Queensland Rugby Union (QRU)

·         Trials for Miami SHS Rugby 7’s inter school teams to compete in various carnivals and competitions.

·         Event organisation and management


 “Being a part of the Miami SHS Rugby 7’s excellence program has allowed my skill development to go through the roof! Now I am so confident when I run onto the field that my parents don’t even recognise me. My goal is to represent Australia at the 2024 Olympic Games”


An annual fee in addition to the school resource scheme fee is payable before a student commences in an Excellence Program and each subsequent year that the student is a part of a program. The fees for 2019 are still being finalised at this point, however you will be notified at the time positions are awarded.
